Headsets

Here is a question that I pose: should a person wear headsets and listen to music or e-books when he or she is walking? Is it safe? Do you block out too much reality, such as cars and people? Should you use this time to enjoy your walk?

Thoughts?

  1. I like to listen to audiobooks when I walk - it's like a reward for me. I do tend to get tangled up in my headphones, especially when I have both my grandson in the stroller and my dog Eloise on the leash, though.

  2. When I walk, I usually do it on a track where it does not matter if I can hear the cars or people, but when walking on busy streets, I think it is important to be aware of your surroundings.

  3. I do not like to listen to anything. I like to hear the sounds of the neighborhood and the activities that are around me. That is part of the enjoyment of my walk.

  4. Perhaps listening to books or music on a walk is the essence of enjoyment. Seems hard to make a rule that would cover every person in every situation. Best advice--Watch where you are going, step lightly, duck when you have to.

  5. If I walk, I don't wear headsets as I think you are not here- there.... I go to the gym (or maybe a track) to escape reality. That being said, books on tape is what gives me motivation to exercise. I try to save them for the gym. If the story is good... I stay longer. I look forward to the story. I can forget I am exercising.

  6. I always wear a headset to escape reality as well. My music is very energetic and can and has scared women and children. I also love jogging on the strand and sand in Manhattan Beach. Here I will take one ear piece out facing the ocean. The other side will play my music but in a lower volume. Other bands I would avoid singing in public would be "Culture Club" and "Wham" if you are a guy. I am not Dr. Phil, but I believe that is a form of assault in some parts of this country.
